Toledo

Hi Everybody.

I am a third year physiotherapy student doing practices in Toledo, Spain. This is the first time I am writing here.
To begin with, I would like to say that Toledo is wonderful. Despite the autumnish weather and some problem with accommodation, it has still been a new and exciting adventure.

I arrived here on 19th of November. It was about 9 o´clock in the evening. I decided to take a taxi from the bus station. I had booked a hostel beforehand and when I got there, the doors were already closed. I thought that I now I would be in deep trouble. But then, after some minutes of yelling, the owner finally heard me and showed me to my room. All was well. The next day I went to see the local Erasmus coordinators and in the evening checked out some flats. One of them was OK, but the catch was that I could move in on 1st December. So I spent some days in the hostel and then most of the time left in another hostel, that was a bit cheaper. On 1st December I moved into the appartment and it has been quite good. Although, there were loads of problems with accommodation. A few times I had no idea, whether I could stay another day in the hostel or not. Another funny thing is that the sam flat where I am living now was turned down for me twice. But now, everything is OK.

Speaking about the practice, it has been very good. Currently I am working in the Hospital Nacional de Paraplejicos. So far it has been a great learning and practicing experience. I think that this is enough for the first blog post here.
All in all, Toledo is a neat town and if anyone ist thinking about coming here as well, then I would definitely recommend it, however, I would be a good idea to get a solid accommodation agreement beforehand. Anyway, I hope to make another post soon.

Best regards,
Ott Vanem

Annika in Italy

12.11.2009

Hey everybody!
It has been a long time since I wrote about my life here. Time is flying very fast here and I like it, cause there is no possibilty to feel bored! Last week my friend invited me for a launch with his family. It was very nice experience, food was typical from Italy – pasta with tomatoes and ofcourse – cheese. There was a lot of food, so that day, I did`nt want to eat dinner… And ofcourse after launch his father offered me grappa, different grappas.. Im not very big fan of strong alcohol, but I took a bit, just for the taste. Here in Italy they drink grappa after eating, just a little bit for digestion. And during the launch they also asked what we are eating Estonia and what we are drinking. For them it`s very strange that estonians and people from northern countries in general drink a lot of strong alcohol, like vodka… They told me, that it`s probably becasue of the cold weather.

It`s good that weather here is warm, 15 degrees in the day, so it`s perfect for me, I can jogg in the park and don`t have to wear heavy clothes and boots. So probably, when I go home on the 15 of december I`ll have a weather-shock.

Back to Portugal...an returning to Tallinn :)

Hi again!

Last week we made another trip, but this time to our country. We left Tallinn with 5degrees and went by ferry to Helsinki in a very troubled trip because the weather was unstable.
We arrived to Helsinki in the morning and spent all day visiting the beautiful squares, streets and buildings and in the evening we met our portuguese friends, Chico and Horácio that are in Erasmus too.
After 5 hours flying we arrived to Portugal and although it wasn’t sunny, the weather was warmer than in Estonia and Finland. We left our luggage at home and went to Bairro Alto, one part of Lisbon that is really good to meet all friends and have a lot of fun.
We had been with our parents that cooked us the typical Portuguese food and have drunk lots of coffee, things that we missed a lot in this two months. In the last day there, we went to Coimbra, the student’s city, where was a big students party. It’s call “Latada” and lasts 3 days. We watched some concerts from nacional and international singers, sang and danced all night. One part of this party is a really funny procession of students with some costumes that we had opportunity to saw.
In the return we brought some typical food in the luggage and in the first night in Tallinn we made a Portuguese dinner with our friends. We made a codfish dish which they really liked.
We can´t forget mentioning the Halloween night in the last weekend. We went to Olde Hansa, a medieval restaurant in the Old Town, and when we were having dinner we saw many people in Town Hall square with scary costumes , make up and crazy expressions. Was really different from what we are used to because in Portugal we don’t celebrate to much this date.
After dinner we went to a Halloween’s party in a friend’s house and the decoration included a head and a heart of a pig, some paintings with “blood” in the walls and off course the characteristic pumpkins.
Yesterday we came back to the practices in the Hospital and in the morning we received a good news: Our Coordinators accepted our proposal and we will have the Conventional Radiology practices in Tallinn, so it means that we will be in the capital until the beginning of January, thing that make us really happy, because we are enjoying very much being here.

Tervisecks!

Annika in Italy

21.10.09

Hey! It has been a long-long time, since I wrote about my life here..I`ve been here exactly one month now. So 8 weeks left… Life has been very-very busy so far. I`ve been in the hospital also, to observe chief-nurses, and when Im in the hospital, my days start at 7.a.m. So, long days for me. And Im also on half way with my diploma thesis!

This Sunday I went to the cinema with a friend, to see a movie… different experience…
Here they have everyhting in italian, even movies in english, so if you don`t understand any italian, you might have some difficulties understanding the movie… other bad thing is also that, the cinema is away from the city, about 15 minutes by car, so it`s difficult to get there without a car…Although cinema itself was very nice, spacious and a wide choice of movies…

I don`t know what it is, but during this time here in Italy, I`ve had several problems with my technology, for example, the wire of my PC just melted one moment and stopped working, so I had to buy a new one… and also my iPod stopped playing from one moment, well it was quit old, but it`s strange that all these thing happend just here and in a short time… So now I have a new one, better and smaller than the old one;)

Few weeks ago I visited Caorle, 2 hours by car from Udine.. Very amazing town, close to sea and they also had very nice little bars and caffeterias there… I recommend warmly!

Weather here is also colder than the first weeks, autumn has arrived!… jacket and boots are necessary now… But it`s sunny and not raining or and snowing like in Estonia now.

Bye-bye for now...:)

2 portugueses in Estonia!!!

Hi!

Our names are Adriana and Mariana and we’re Erasmus students from Portugal. We’re studying Radiology and this is our course last year, so we decided to come to Erasmus to have a different experience, one unique thing :)

Our trip to Estonia was very, very exausting, but funny! We laugh a lot with the unexpected situations and were in Helsinki for just few hours, but we would like to came back.
Now, we’re in Tallin, the capital, until the end of November to do practices in MRI and CT in Ida-Tallinna Keskhaigla (Tallin's Central Hospital), and then we will move to Tartu to practice Mammography and Conventional Radiology. In our first days at the Hospital the Radiology Technicians help us with some words in estonian and Russian, it was difficult because the pronounce is really different from portuguese language, but with some practice we’re already saying some things in estonian.

This experience is being quite adventurous and really amazing, because since we arrived we met many, many different people, from different countries and cultures and we've been through situations that we could never imagine. We were in Tartu for 3 days and we enjoyed, but we have to confess that Tallinn is pretty cool and the Erasmus students that we met here are quite friendly and funny, so let's hope that the experience in Tartu, continues to be as nice as it's being here!!!

One thing we miss from our country is the food, is quite different from here, but we’re managing and already tried many estonian food that we like, for example, the black bread it's reeeeeally tasty and you can have awesome and cheap pancakes in lots of places. The beer is also good, and you can't buy less than half a liter, so it's a generous quantity too ;) because one thing that our tutor, Kreeta told us is: "In Estonia bigger is cheaper", and that is really true here!

The weather is the most complicated part of this adventure, because when we thought that it would be cold in Estonia, we didn't think it would be so early, because we’re in the beginning of October and already is snowing. This way we were both ill for one month already, and we have to hurry up buying some warmer clothes because we weren't expecting this cold so soon.

While the weather was sunny we had the opportunity to go to Haapsalu and Kuressaare in Saaremaa where we loved the amazing nature landscapes, the typical handicraft and the windmills that are considered one of the most important symbols of the island.
This weekend we made another trip with Erasmus students to the South of Estonia and we were in Turi's village swing, slept in a castle, walked in Vijandi and Tartu, visited A.Le Coq's factory (beer factory), met Estonia National Park and visited Palamuse Museum in Jogeva. It was really exausting because at night we partied, and we had to wake up early in the morning to visit some places, but the result was a great and wonderful weekend.

Well that's it for now, we'll keep posting our adventures here, so you can know how it's like to do Erasmus in Estonia...

Terviseks :)

Reunion

When I one day opened my email box and found João Novo email I was very surprised. I knew him, he was incoming Erasmuse student in our college in spring 2008 from Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saude de Lisboa, Portugal. I was even more suprised when I read his email, he sayd that he is coming back to visit Estonia and would like to see also me. Of course I agreed to meet with him.

When we see each other on last Friday evening he told to me: do I remember that he promised to come back to Estonia one day and now he was here. He was here with his friend-supervisor from the hospital where he is working at the moment as radiographer. They get together also with João student tutors Laura and Merit. João sayd that the reunion was very good.

And again he promised that one day he is going to visit Estonia again. Hope to see his someday again.

So you see, if you also want to find more new friends abroad and get to know Europe better then become an Erasmuse student and explore Europe. Choose Estonia.

Annika in Italy

Greetings from Italy, Udine!

It`s a wonderful place, cause in Italy you really have everything! Best food, very good music, famous artists, fashion, good weather and above all very friendly people. Im very lucky to be here and to have possibilty to enjoy all these things Italy has to offer!

It is my second time with Erasmus in Italy, my first time was a year ago from may to august. The first time here I made my practice: pediatrics, surgical and internal medicine. It was my first expierence to be in the hospital away from Estonia. So now Im at the same place after one year. It feels very good to be back, cause the first experience really made me a bigger person, more confident and also more curious, more than before, I want to try new things in life… And also I cannot forget the people I met here, the social baggage you got for being an Erasmus student is priceless… So I recommend warmly!
And another what is very important in choosing the place where you are planning to make your Erasmus experience, is to choose a place with a very different culture from your own country… For me it was rule number one, cause despite learning and professional skills, Erasmus is also a good possibility to learn other culture and people. It really gives a lot for your personality and it helps you understand other people more in the future.

The reason why Im here this time, is my diploma-thesis. Im writing about eating disorders among young athletes. Here I have total access to medical journals and to library, and if it possible, maybe I can also visit some eating disorders centers here. .. Hopefully I can:)

Today on my way to school I felt very good, despite the fact that Im far away from home, it still feels little bit like home. All the familiar places and even the smell of this city is familiar… Only Im little bit different and able to see things I wasn`t able to see before…
My first days here in Udine, I feel very good, hopefully I don`t loose this feeling…
